He went from feeling like Heliodor was a GOOD TEAM that could MAKE A NAME FOR THEMSELVES to realizing that they actually have wildly different values and for some people those values mean murder is easier than drawing a picture. He also thinks he may be the only sane adult on his team, and he's pretty sure he's not being a very effective one. On the other hand, he really developed a bunch of attachments (to Heliodor and Chuck) very quickly, so there's at least somewhere for his reactions to go.
